Ardnamurchan Distillery

An independent guide for planning a visit in Scotland’s Highlands region.

About Ardnamurchan Distillery

Ardnamurchan Distillery is at Glenbeg on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula in the West Highlands. It was developed by Adelphi, the independent bottler, and began filling casks in 2014 after a feasibility project that started in 2007.

The location is not incidental branding. The distillery matures whisky in its own dunnage warehouses near the North Atlantic, uses local renewable energy and recycles production co-products within the peninsula’s rural economy.

History

Adelphi’s name reaches back to the former Loch Katrine Adelphi Distillery in Glasgow, founded in 1826. The modern independent bottling company restarted in 1993, then chose Ardnamurchan for a new distillery. Work began in 2013 and the first cask was filled on 1 August 2014.

The first Ardnamurchan single malt was released in 2020. The business has since developed age-stated, batch and single-cask releases while retaining a collective blending team rather than attributing every vatting decision to one named master blender.

What makes it distinctive

Ardnamurchan makes both peated and unpeated spirit. Its washbacks combine wood and stainless steel, while the spirit still has a boil ball that promotes reflux. Shell-and-tube condensers stand outside the building, and spirit is reduced with water from the Glenmore spring before filling.

Power and heat come from local renewable sources: hydro-electricity, solar panels and a biomass boiler using woodchip from nearby forestry. Draff and pot ale are combined for animal feed. The distillery also records production information digitally so bottle owners can trace batch provenance.

Whisky character and significance

The core style combines unpeated and gently peated spirit, commonly matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Official descriptions refer to fruit, honey, salinity and measured smoke, reflecting the intention to make a west-coast style without allowing peat to dominate every release.

Visiting Ardnamurchan Distillery

Guided tours cover the production rooms and warehouses, with a visitor centre and shop also available. The remote position means advance booking is sensible and drivers should allow for slow roads; the official visitor information provides takeaway samples for those not drinking on site.

Location and surrounding area

The Ardnamurchan peninsula lies west of Fort William and is approached by long, narrow roads or via ferry connections. A distillery visit can be combined with the peninsula’s coast and lighthouse, but it requires a dedicated West Highland itinerary rather than a short diversion.
