About BenRiach Distillery
Benriach stands on the old Riach farm south of Elgin, in the northern part of Speyside. Founder John Duff chose the site close to his Longmorn Distillery and above a mineral-rich underground aquifer. Its apparent continuity as a late-Victorian distillery hides an unusually long silent period and an unusually varied modern production programme.
The distillery now makes three distinct types of spirit: classic unpeated malt, whisky made with Highland-peated barley, and small batches distilled three times. That range, combined with maturation in many different kinds of cask, makes variety rather than a single narrow recipe central to Benriach's identity.
History
John Duff founded Benriach in 1898 during the final years of a major Victorian distillery-building boom. The timing was difficult. The collapse of Pattison, Elder & Co. and the wider market downturn forced Benriach to close in 1900, after only two years of distilling. Its floor maltings continued working for neighbouring Longmorn, linked for a time by a small railway, which helped preserve the site while its stills remained silent.
Glenlivet Distillers restored production in 1965. Benriach began experimenting with peated spirit in the early 1970s, expanded from two stills to four after Seagram acquired it in the 1980s, and released its first single malt under its own name in 1994. Triple-distilled batches followed during the 1990s, giving the distillery three contrasting spirit styles.
After another brief mothballing, an independent consortium led by Billy Walker acquired Benriach in 2004 and developed its stock of unpeated, peated and differently matured whiskies. Brown-Forman bought the company in 2016. The present range continues to draw on the breadth of spirit and casks accumulated across these periods rather than treating Benriach solely as a supplier for blends.
What makes it distinctive
Benriach's four stills produce a fruit-led Speyside spirit. The unpeated style provides the core, while a seasonal run using Highland peat creates smoke with a different character from the maritime peat commonly associated with Islay. A limited triple-distillation campaign adds a lighter, particularly fruit-forward spirit to the warehouses.
Cask diversity is equally important. Bourbon barrels, sherry casks and casks that previously held wines or other spirits allow the blending team to assemble whiskies with different layers of fruit, spice, sweetness and smoke. The old floor maltings have also been revived for selected periods, preserving a physical link with the operation that kept the site alive during its 1900-1965 silence.
Whisky character and significance
Benriach's house style is generally described through orchard and stone-fruit notes, but the distillery's three production styles make any single flavour summary incomplete. Unpeated releases emphasise fruit and malt; peated releases combine Speyside fruit with earthy Highland smoke; triple-distilled parcels tend towards a lighter texture. The range demonstrates how fermentation, distillation style and cask choice can produce markedly different results at one site.
Visiting BenRiach Distillery
Benriach opened its first official visitor centre in 2021. The distillery offers bookable experiences focused on production, maturation and tasting, with the working site and warehouses forming part of the story. Exact experiences and access vary, so visitors should confirm arrangements directly before travelling.
Location and surrounding area
The distillery is outside Elgin near Longmorn, within a dense but rural part of the Speyside whisky landscape. Elgin provides transport connections and other whisky-related stops, while the surrounding Laich of Moray and Spey valley reward a less hurried itinerary than a string of tightly timed appointments.
