Cardhu Distillery

An independent guide for planning a visit in Scotland’s Speyside region.

About Cardhu Distillery

Cardhu is a Speyside distillery at Knockando, in the hills above the River Spey between Aberlour and Grantown-on-Spey. Its story is inseparable from Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth, two women whose work took the site from illicit farm distilling to an established commercial producer with a lasting connection to Johnnie Walker.

The whisky is known for an approachable, honeyed and orchard-fruited style. That character serves both Cardhu single malt and Johnnie Walker blends, making the distillery an important example of how one malt can have a public identity of its own while remaining strategically important to a much larger blended brand.

History

John and Helen Cumming took the lease of Cardow Farm in 1811 and began illicit distilling. Documentary research and local tradition give Helen a central operational role. Stories describe her disguising production and warning nearby distillers when excise officers arrived, though the colourful details belong partly to oral history. The family obtained a licence after the 1823 Excise Act, with 1824 commonly used as Cardhu's legal founding date.

Helen's son Lewis later ran the business, and after his death in 1872 Elizabeth Cumming took control. She rebuilt the distillery on a nearby site in 1884, greatly expanding capacity. The old stills and waterwheel were sold to William Grant as he developed Glenfiddich, creating a direct link between two important Speyside family stories.

John Walker & Sons bought Cardhu in 1893 after becoming a major customer. Elizabeth negotiated continued family involvement and a place for her son on the Walker board. Capacity expanded from two stills to four in 1899 and to six in 1960. The distillery remains closely connected with Johnnie Walker under Diageo ownership while continuing to release Cardhu single malt.

What makes it distinctive

Cardhu's six stills make a relatively gentle Speyside spirit. The modern style developed after the nineteenth-century rebuild and later expansion replaced the smaller equipment associated with the heavier early make. Long fermentation supports fruit development, while distillation and cask selection preserve a smooth texture and restrained weight.

Most Cardhu is matured to support either the single-malt range or the flavour structure of Johnnie Walker. Bourbon and refill casks can emphasise orchard fruit, honey, cereal and soft spice, while selected richer casks add depth. The whisky's importance to blending means stock allocation has at times had consequences for how it was marketed.

Whisky character and significance

Cardhu is commonly associated with apples, pears, honey, malt and gentle spice rather than heavy smoke. A controversial early-2000s decision briefly sold a mixture of malts under Cardhu branding when demand exceeded available single malt. The resulting industry debate contributed to clearer use of the term 'blended malt'; Cardhu's main range subsequently returned to single-malt labelling.

Visiting Cardhu Distillery

The visitor experience gives Helen and Elizabeth Cumming a prominent place alongside production, maturation and Cardhu's role in Johnnie Walker. Tours, tastings, retail and food or drink facilities operate at the site, but exact availability and accessible route options should be confirmed directly. No fixed schedules or prices are reproduced here.

Location and surrounding area

Knockando is rural despite being in the heart of Speyside. There is no normal public transport directly to the distillery, so travel requires a driver, taxi or organised tour. The Spey valley, nearby distilleries and villages such as Aberlour provide context, but road time between appointments should not be underestimated.
